2019 New Training Class in Fresno

Welcome New Master Gardener Trainees

Congratulations on being selected as a UC Master Gardener Trainee for the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) in Madera County.

If you are unable to accept this volunteer position, please notify the Master Gardner Coordinator as soon as possible.

If you accept this volunteer position complete and sign the UC Master Gardener Acceptance Confirmation, the Code of Conduct/Responsibilities and Rights, and the Proof of Driver License and Automotive Liability insurance forms. These forms and payment to the UC Regents are due on Friday, December 14, 2018. There are limited number of partial scholarships available. If you wish to apply, complete and return the scholarship application per the instructions on the form by, November 23, 2018. If you are selected for a scholarship you will be informed of the discounted fee, due and payable by check. The discount ranges from $50.00 to $100.00 depending on the number of scholarships granted. The $250.00 class fee maybe paid by check made out to UC Regents or online with credit card. There is a small fee for use of credit card.

The University of California requires all volunteers to secure background clearance through a confidential fingerprinting process. The goal of this procedure is to provide a safe environment for all those participating in our program. Receiving background clearance with the University must be done prior to December, 14, 2018. Previous DOJ clearance does not qualify. Please follow the directions on the live scan form. The cost for the DOJ clearance process is approximately $20.00. If you have resided in California for less than 2 years, you must complete an FBI background clearance, which is national in scope and may result in an additional fee. Information and hour’s maybe found at  You may use any live scan service you wish, however we have had prompt notification with this vendor. Results are confidential and securely monitored by the Custodian of Criminal Records, Risk Services, UC Agriculture and Natural Resources at UC Davis.

Training will begin Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the UC Center, 550 E Shaw Avenue, Fresno, in the Inyo/Kern room, and will and continue for 16 consecutive weeks. Class is in session from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The training concludes on Thursday, April 18, 2018. Upon passing a final exam (broken into 2 segments) with a score of 70% or above, you will become a certified First Year Master Gardener. A celebratory lunch will be held the last day of class.

On the first day of class you will receive your textbook, a class schedule, class rooster and other pertinent information. You will also receive a temporary name badge. Plan to bring your textbook each week and be prepared to take notes.

You will be clustered with a team of trainees and assigned to certified UC Master Gardener mentors, who will be contacting you to welcome you into the program and answer any questions. You are also invited to attend the Annual Appreciation and Awards Dinner on Sunday, December 2, 2018, as a way to get acquainted with your new peers. You will receive an invitation soon by mail with pertinent information.

(Parking on campus is available in 3 parking lots: Parking Lot A, Parking Lot B, and Parking Lot C. Daily parking lot passes are available for $1.00 from our parking lot kiosks.)

Most MG work in the garden on Tuesday around 9:00 am You are welcome to stop by and see what is going on the garden.
